Strawberries & Basil: Summer Synchronicity

Basil and strawberries are a surprising and delightful flavor combination—in my opinion this is one of the garden’s synergistic miracles! The intense red of the berries and plums contrasted with the vivid green basil perfectly expresses the exuberance of the summer garden.

Strawberry Basil Salad

Makes 8 servings
- 1/4 cup mild honey (or more, depending on fruit)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed
- 4 cups thinly sliced, ripe strawberries
- 3 cups thinly sliced, ripe Santa Rosa or Damson plums
- 4 cups (packed) finely slivered fresh basil
- 1 1/2 cups chopped pecan
- 1/2-cup plain, full-fat yogurt (Greek is the best) or sour cream
- Freshly cracked black pepper
- One hour before serving, combine honey, lemon juice and sliced fruit. Refrigerate.
- To serve: Toss together the marinated fruit, pecans and the basil. Serve drizzled with some of the yogurt. Add a generous grinding of freshly cracked black pepper.

I came to your page specifically looking for this fantastic recipe that you did years back at a Sur la Table cooking class in Portland, OR…
thrilled to see that it was posted on your blog.

Is this the salad you served tonight 7/15/10 at the QA Farmers Mkt? one of ingredients you mentioned tonight was vanilla. How much? 1/2 t? Also tonight’s salad had creme fraiche–seems as if I should use that, not yogurt or sour cream. Salad was fabulous! Also opened magazine Veranda tonight – and there YOU were with all those summer drinks! What a lucky coincidence! Wish I had known all this when I saw you at the market at 5. Can’t wait to make the salad and am delighted to know of you!
